The client

Founded in 1853 and headquatered in Vienna, Austra, Prinzhorn Group is a company with over 10,000 employees in 16 countries, and a European market leader in the fields of recycling, paper and packaging solutions. With an annual turnover of EUR 2,2 billion, the Prinzhorn Group ranks third in this market segment in Europe and continues creating value for all its stakeholders.

The situation

Prinzhorn had already recognized the importance of data governance and identified Microsoft Purview as a supporting platform. The challenge was not the lack of tools, but the lack of practical understanding of how governance concepts translate into everyday operations across the organization. With multiple business units, locations and systems involved, the company needed to build internal know-how and align business and data teams around a structured and actionable approach to governance.

To move forward, Prinzhorn needed:

  • practical guidance on how to operationalize data governance in Microsoft Purview
  • a clear governance structure linking domains, assets and ownership
  • better understanding of how Purview capabilities could improve transparency, trust and data quality
  • visibility into licensing, pricing and roadmap to support informed next steps

Our activity

To address Prinzhorn’s needs, we designed a dedicated workshop package focused on operationalizing data governance with Microsoft Purview. The format was tailored to the client’s governance maturity, business priorities and existing data platform, ensuring that the sessions were directly relevant and actionable.

The agenda was built to combine three perspectives that are critical in governance initiatives: conceptual understanding, operating model design and practical platform enablement.

Three perspectives of the Data Governance workshop

This allowed both business and technical stakeholders to build a shared understanding of governance and see how it could work in practice.

The workshop included:

  • an introduction to core data governance concepts and operating models
  • guidance on governance roles, ownership structures and glossary management
  • hands-on demonstrations of Microsoft Purview capabilities in a dedicated environment
  • discussions on how Purview could support governance within Prinzhorn’s Databricks-based data landscape
  • visibility into practical next steps, including tooling, processes and implementation direction

Benefits:

The workshops helped Prinzhorn build the foundation for a more structured approach to data governance by aligning business and data teams around common roles, concepts and processes.

They improved visibility into data assets and lineage, strengthened trust in data used for reporting and decision-making, and gave management a clearer understanding of Microsoft Purview capabilities and the next steps for governance adoption across the organization.
